At Broadoak, we recognise that transferring to a new school is a major step in the life of a young person. We would like to inform you about our preparations to help your child make a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. Below is our programme of transition activities, designed to help you and your child to prepare for this exciting time, get to know the school and to feel confident about making Broadoak your first choice.
We look forward to meeting you throughout the year. If there is anything else you need to know at this stage, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Worswick.
Autumn Term of Year 6
Spy Academy Thursday 27th September
Broadoak School is hosting a Year 6 taster day for all Year 6 pupils from Forest Gate Academy, Partington Central Academy and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School. The ‘Spy Academy’ day will allow pupils to experience a range of specifically designed sessions relating to English whilst solving puzzles and mysteries. There will also be an opportunity to visit the new library and to experience a flavour of secondary school life.
Your child will be brought to Broadoak by their class teacher who will remain with them for the day. Food at break and lunchtime will be provided free of charge.
The day will start at 9:30pm and will finish at 2:50pm and will include pupil presentations reflecting on the day’s activities. We would like to invite all parents to be in the audience for the culmination of this event. The presentations will begin at 2:20pm and we encourage all parents to arrive at around 2.00pm for light refreshments.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Spy Academy presentation.
Open Evening Thursday 27th September
The Open Evening will, at 3.00pm, follow on from the Spy academy presentation until 7.00pm. The Open Evening is an extremely important event in the life of all Year 6 children as it will provide both parents and children with the opportunity to look around the school, ask questions, meet members of staff and experience a range of new and exciting subjects. We would be extremely proud to welcome the parents and carers of every Year 6 child in Partington to one of our most important nights in the calendar.
Gifted & Talented Poetry Workshop Tuesday 9th October
The English department at Broadoak has been lucky enough to have built up a long-standing relationship with poet Tony Walsh. He has led assemblies and workshops in performance poetry for all year groups, providing inspiration and opening up creative opportunities for our pupils. His iconic poem ‘This is the place’ presented the right words to Manchester when it was in shock. His words and his performances are powerful and moving.
We are inviting him back to Broadoak on 9th October at 1.00pm to deliver a workshop with the High Attaining Year 6 pupils from the 3 partner primary schools. This will provide the pupils with the opportunity to hear him perform and to respond imaginatively with their own poems. To continue building relationships with our parents we would like to invite parents/carers to attend from 2.30pm to hear the work that the pupils have produced and to enjoy some performance poetry from Tony Walsh too. (Further details will follow via invitations from school).
The Spring/Summer Term of Year 6
The Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher from Broadoak will visit each partnership primary school and as many out of catchment schools as possible. During this visit they will tell your child about the school and give the children the chance to ask questions.
During the spring/summer term, based upon the information we have about each child, we will organise the children into house groups. These are mixed ability groups which usually contain at least one child known to your son or daughter from their primary school.
Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July child will spend one week at Broadoak and will meet their tutor and begin to learn their way around the site, go to a range of lessons and meet other children in the class. On the Monday of this week all parents/carers are invited to visit Broadoak for the “New Parents Welcome Evening”. This will allow you to meet your child’s Form Tutor, hear about the curriculum, talk about the school and meet the Head of School.
