SEND
Parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities are no different to any other parents in that you are looking for an environment where your child is most likely to thrive: where they will feel happy, safe and secure and benefit from the kind of teaching, support and pastoral care that enables them to reach their potential.
To be considered a child with SEND, a young person must require something in addition to, or different from, mainstream teaching. Whether a young person is placed on our SEND register at SEND Support, or the young person qualifies for an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan), they have every entitlement to be successful in their five-year journey at Broadoak School, as we prepare all young people to believe, achieve and succeed in life beyond school.
We work as a team. Each child is closely monitored throughout the year by curriculum and pastoral leads, in collaboration with the SENDCO and Learning Support Team. Parental support and assistance at home is invaluable at this stage and can greatly enhance the work done in school. We always strive to work as a team, with the young person at the centre of everything that we do.
If their progress is causing concern, based on teacher feedback and assessment data, pupils may be withdrawn from lessons on an individual or small-group basis to receive extra help and support. Any withdrawal from lessons is done so with careful consideration alongside parents. Clearly defined outcomes are set, which are reviewed half-termly to ensure that any intervention is time well spent, before they return to lessons when appropriate.
We offer a comprehensive intervention package to support literacy, numeracy and/ or social and emotional challenges, dependent on the needs of each individual. We work creatively to adapt our teaching and learning to ensure that all young people receive the breadth and depth of a curriculum that they deserve. Children will be appropriately challenged in their learning in order to reach their full potential. We foster a ‘no opt out’ attitude and growth mindset.
Beyond the classroom, we have an exciting program of outdoor education activities for all children across Years 7-11 to embrace learning in the real world. The extra-curricular offer provides a wealth of opportunities for each young person to grow and develop holistically throughout their time at Broadoak School. We are caring for a young person, not just a learner.
Our provision for children challenged by social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) is called ‘The Link’ and as such is ‘the link’ between home and school. Providing a sanctuary away from the busyness of mainstream school life; ‘The Link’ is the first port of call for many of our learners who struggle to make it across the school’s threshold. Children are then mentored strategically, with bespoke plans to be able to participate in as much as possible in the life of the school.
For children with an EHCP, school will receive funding to further enhance their offer of support. This is delegated to meet each child’s needs according to their Individual Education Plan, reviewed annually, and is produced in partnership with the Local Authority. We have outstanding links with the Authority and many other specialist support agencies including Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists. They complement our own experience and expertise in meeting the needs of all our children with special educational needs, including the assessment of any child whose needs may emerge during secondary education.
Pupils with physical disabilities are also fully integrated into all aspects of the curriculum and receive help from Teaching Assistants as required in practical lessons.
The school curriculum complies with all duties of the Equality Act 2010 as we promote equality for people with protected characteristics, and embed fairness in our curriculum design and implementation. Alterations are made to classroom access, level of support, technology, and a range of other actions to meet specific needs of individuals whilst offering, wherever possible, the same curriculum access. Furthermore, our ongoing Personal Development curriculum, engaged in by all young people, highlights specific protected characteristics and actively seeks to promote equality within, and outside of, our school community.
